Vitamins and Candy; Politics and Crafts

November 1, 2018

The Golden Age Center was decked out for Halloween! We had lots of spooky characters show up for our costume party on the 31st. Lunch included Spanish rice and black beans and a sack of “treats.” Thanks to all who donated candy! Also, the center has a NEW floor in the dining room and chair protectors on the chairs to protect it for years to come.

We celebrated October birthdays on Oct. 17 with birthday cake for Anita Combs, Donna Dyke, Vickie Kelley, James Monroe, Earnest Morton, Katherine Mullen, Nancy Precht, MaeDeen Raney and Martha Sliger. Happy birthday to you!

We were saddened to hear of the loss of two long time former members: Rita Coats and Maxine Turner. We extend our sympathy to both families. Continue to remember our sick: Syble Martin, Carol Wood, Betty Wood and the Williamsons.

Our nutritionist encouraged us to “set our sights on good nutrition” with information to protect our eyesight from cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration. Vitamins E, C, A, and Lutein and Zeaxanthin are essential for good eye health. Vitamin E is found in wheat germ, nuts, and seeds. Vitamin C is found in oranges, grapefruit, strawberries, broccoli, and peppers. Vitamin A is found in carrots, milk, and tomatoes. Lutein and Zeaxanthin are phytonutrients in broccoli, green peas, kiwi, red grapes, yellow squash, oranges, corn, mangos, and honeydew melons. The center offers balanced meals to seniors for only $1.50. Call the center for information at 598-5733 between 8:00 and 1:30. However, no one is available to answer the phone between 11:00 and 12:00. We are not able to serve drop-ins so be sure to call the day before for a tour of the center. As a member of Project Heart, we must account for every meal served to members. New members are welcome!

Did you see that Hobby Lobby bought Saint Gregory’s? I am curious as to their plans for such a landmark in Shawnee. I was surprised when the Catholic Church did not step in to save the University. I do hope that Hobby Lobby uses it to the glory of God. I will close with a plea to VOTE on Nov. 6th and a reminder to move your clocks back one hour as Daylight Saving Time ends on Nov. 4th.
