Last week, while eating breakfast at David's Cafe in Earlsboro, one of my friends asked this question: Why do we call January, January? Why don't we call it Washington or Cold or something else? Here is the answer.

Our entire calendar is a memorial to Gaius Julius Caesar, the first "Dictator in Perpetuity" of the Roman Empire (49 to 44 BCE). He, in his role of "Pontifex Maximus" (Latin meaning chief Roman priest), was in charge of announcing each month and its events.
