Long Road To Clinton Leads To Losses For Savage Teams

February 21, 2019

The Savages and Lady Savages had a long road trip to face tough draws as they headed to Clinton for the District Tournament. The two plus hour bus trip was not kind to either of the squads as they both fell to the consolation bracket in the Regional Tournament beginning today (Thursday) in Anadarko.

The Lady Savages seemed to be out of sync from the beginning as they faced a very athletic and suffocating Clinton (12-12) pressure defense. Tecumseh trailed 18-7 after the opening quarter and then turned the ball over nine times in the second quarter to fall behind 35-16 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Lady Savages turned up the defensive pressure to hold Clinton to single digits at nine points, but the T-Town ladies couldn't muster any offense with only three points of their own and trailed 44-19 headed to the fourth.

The fourth quarter was closer for Tecumseh, but it didn't matter as the Lady Red Tornadoes had done all the damage needed and claimed the District Championship with a 54-27 demolition of the Lady Savages.

The Lady Savages were led in scoring by Schantel Evans with 12 points. Addison Day tossed in six points and Tawny Billy added five points in the loss. Billy was the leading rebounder of the Lady Savages with seven while Evans grabbed six.

The Lady Savages (12-12) begin play in the Consolation Bracket of the Regional Tournament today (Thursday) at 1:30 in Anadarko as they face Chickasha. A win would propel Tecumseh to the consolation bracket semifinals tomorrow (Friday) at 1:30 pm while a loss would end the Lady Savages' season.

The Savages got caught up in a twister of their own in the second game of the evening, but kept it close all night until Clinton used a big fourth quarter effort to finish the home team sweep to claim the District Title.

Clinton (19-5) got off to a good start and led 14-8 after the first quarter before the second quarter turned into a real battle as the Savages stayed close and trailed 28-21 going to the locker room. The Savages turned up the defensive pressure in the second half and forced Clinton into five turnovers in the third quarter committing none of their own.

Tecumseh took the third period 11-9 to cut the Red Tornado lead to 37-32 headed to the final stanza. The Savages made several runs to get close in the second half, but Clinton got a little distance and went into a stall with 7:00 left in the game to thwart the Savage defense. Clinton was efficient down the stretch and hit critical free throws as they pulled away for a 61-48 win.

It was a very balanced scoring attack for the Savages as Ed Carey led Tecumseh with 12 points on the night while Anthony Billy was also in double figures with 10. Jayden Shafer dropped in nine points for the Savages while Kainan Ryan tossed in eight and Josiah Mendoza added six. Carey was the leader on the boards with 10 rebounds on the night while Shafer grabbed six.

The Savages (14-10) play today (Thursday) at 3 pm in the consolation bracket of the Regional Tournament in Anadarko as they also face Chickasha (7-17). With a win in the consolation bracket, the Savages will play again at 3 pm tomorrow at Anadarko. Any loss from this point on would send the Savages home for the year.
