Once again, the divisive issue of abortion has become national news.

On Jan. 22, 1973, the United States Supreme Court ruled 7-2 that a right to privacy under the due process clause of the 14th Amendment extended to a woman's right to have an abortion. This decision is known as Roe v. Wade, 410 U.S. 1 B(1973). This law actually puts a time limit for "fetal viability" which is generally regarded as 24 weeks.

In the past two months several states have passed or are debating late term abortion bills. In January, New York passed the Reproductive Health Act allowing late term abortion until the baby's due date. Last week, Vermont passed H.57, a "no limits" abortion bill that makes terminating a pregnancy a "fundamental right" allowing abortion at any stage of gestation. Other states considering similar bills are Virginia, Illinois, New Mexico, and Rhode Island.

"For Thou didst form my inward parts; Thou didst weave me in my mothers womb. I will give thanks to thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made." This statement is found in Psalm 139, verse 13. In this Psalm we learn that God is the creator of human life. Two weeks ago President Trump quoted this verse during his State of the Union speech. He used this quote as a way of introducing a law to eliminate late term abortion.

That bill is H.R. 4712, called the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. Basically, it requires that a baby born alive be given proper humane care to continue living. By the time you read this article, that bill will have been voted on by the United States Senate. It should pass 100 to 0, but it may not pass at all. What has happened to us in America?

If I am certain of any one thing, it is that God abhors abortion. It kills innocent babies and leaves emotional scars on mothers, fathers and families.

Over the last few decades I have counseled with several who experienced the pain of abortion. Some of these people attend our churches. Our pews contain the guilty. The same is true of every sin we preach against. Praise God, He forgives us of all our sin. His grace through Christ trumps all evil.
