Shawnee Public Schools Plans Virtual Graduation
April 9, 2020
Shawnee Public Schools will hold a virtual graduation for the class of 2020.
“We will have virtual graduation on May 18 through a platform with Shawnee cable TV,” said Shawnee Superintendent Dr. April Grace. “It will be on the regular night at the regular time. We’ve also rescheduled for in-person graduation, in case there is an opportunity to do that for the seniors. That will be July 17 at 7 pm at Firelake (Arena). We don’t know where things will be at that time, but if there is an opportunity to provide an actual graduation ceremony, then we want to try to do that.
“We’ve also been trying to recognize our seniors, nine or ten a day,” said Grace. “It’s kind of an unusual year to be trying to graduate from high school.” The senior profiles are being published on social media using photos and information already gathered to be printed in the yearbook.
The school served over 19,000 meals the first week of delivery to students after school buildings were closed. Grace said, “We will probably hit 18,000 to 20,000 this week.”
Continuous Distance Learning Resources are available at the following link on the Shawnee Public Schools Website: tinyurl.com/shawneelearning. For those who cannot access these online, printed packets are available at Homeland on Independence near the handwashing station and at Walmart in the customer service area. Parents can also call the school Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday between 9 am and 2 pm for curbside pickup. Instructional calendars for continuous learning will be released every Thursday.
The agenda for Monday consisted of routine items that the board completed in approximately fifteen minutes. All personnel board actions were approved as presented, including the rehire of administrative, staff, and support personnel as well as extra duty contracts. The board also approved Annual lease-purchase agreements for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2021.
