County Fair Cancelled As COVID-19 Cases Rise Statewide

The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed yet another victim - the 83rd annual Pottawatomie County Free Fair.

In a letter released Thursday morning, fair board chairman Randy Gilbert said the board voted Wednesday night to cancel the event. "This is not something taken lightly and there was much discussion," he said. "Each year the fair board strives to have the best county fair we possibly can."

Gilbert said the board had decided in June, when virus cases appeared to be improving, to "hold a reduced size fair to allow for social distancing and extra cleaning time for protection of everyone. We knew we were being hopeful, but there was no harm or risks in waiting until the dates approached to make a final decision."

But as the number of new cases spiked in recent weeks, the board consulted health and school officials and decided cancellation was best. "The safety of our friends and neighbors" was the main concern, he said. He thanked the volunteers who have already put in hours of work planning the fair.

"We will be counting the days for 2021 Pottawatomie County Free Fair," Gilbert said.
