Tecumseh Golden Age Center

September 10, 2020

Summer always seems officially over when school starts and Labor Day arrives. Yet many of the things we often take for granted, like the county fair, will not happen this year along with many other cancelled events.

The Golden Age Center remains closed. One of the things I have enjoyed this summer is watching the hummingbirds. They are named for the humming sound created by their beating wings. As I sat in my tea house, one came and hovered very close to my face because they are much more fearless than you would expect since they are the smallest birds native to the Americas.

They feed on the nectar of certain flowers, but many of us also hang hummingbird feeders up that only they can reach with their long bills. To my surprise, they are very territorial too, because I found that three or four would "attack," darting at each other over the bird feeder, even when I added more than one. These hummingbirds do migrate to Central America for the winter so please do not leave your feeders up after the week of Labor Day or you will encourage them to stay and they might freeze in our cold weather. They can fly up to 30 mph so they can make it!

We do not want to be the cause of their death because they rarely live more than five years and the females only lay one or two white eggs in their nests. The males are more colorful than the females and do not help with the nesting. If you decide to get a hummingbird feeder, Quality Hardware in Tecumseh has some beautiful ones to attract these precious birds for your enjoyment.

Here is a recipe for a homemade nectar: Add one cup of white sugar to one gallon of water. Keep the feeders cleaned for the health of the birds. This season for the birds is over, but there is always next year!

P. S. I think the educators (administrators, teachers, and staff which includes custodians, secretaries, bus drivers, cooks, etc.) need a BIG shout out for their effort to start school and provide for our children in this time of the unknown. Also our children are to be commended for stepping up to the task! God bless America where we have free education for all.
