The city of Shawnee is recognized as a Purple Heart City.

Purple Heart Legislative Ambassador Mitch Reed presented the plaque to the city during the meeting held Monday, July 19.

Reed said, "I wanted to thank the city for recognizing combat wounded veterans, but really recognizing all veterans."

Shawnee is joining the Purple Heart family, taking care of all veterans across the state. "Shawnee has had a long reputation of hiring veterans at your police, fire, and stuff," said Reed.

Reed said, "I have a plaque here that says the purple heart special recognition award is bestowed with pride to the city of Shawnee, Oklahoma, for your dedication and support honoring American combat wounded veterans, becoming a permanent Purple Heart city [and is] presented by the Oklahoma state commander and all the patriotic members of the state of Oklahoma, all 3,422 of us. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts."
