Special Elections In Asher And Bethel Acres

September 9, 2021

The Polls will open at 7 am Tuesday, Sep. 14 for the Town of Asher and the Town of Bethel Acres Special Elections.

Asher will be voting to fill two unexpired trustee terms. Voters will choose two of the three candidates listed on the ballot. Robby Mosley, Wesley Culwell, Jr, and Kenny Taylor are seeking to fill the positions.

Bethel Acres is looking to frame a charter for its own government. The town has operated for years under the belief that it already had a charter in place. However, this is not the case.

The vote on Sep. 14 is a yes or no vote on whether the citizens want Bethel Acres to be a charter town. If the proposition passes, a second vote on the specific language contained in the charter will be brought to a vote of the people.

A charter is considered the most important legal document of a town or city. It establishes boundaries, outlines the handling of public services, defines how the city or town is organized, how it functions and all related procedures. A charter for an existing municipality can only be done by a vote of the people.

In previous meetings where the Town of Bethel Acres Trustees discussed some of the language to be included in the charter, Mayor Tony Carlile confirmed the five-acre rule would be included in the final draft of the town charter. Once a charter is voted on and approved by the people, no changes can be made without another vote of the people.

Poles will be open 7 am to 7pm
