During the 4-H Skills Day held at North Rock Creek High School on June 20, members learned how to decorate cupcakes from Susan Crow. Other classes were making reverse tie-dyed shirts, musical shakers, first aid kits, & a flower craft, as well as learning about animal biosecurity and podcasting. Home Church members Tara Ashcraft, Tatum Kuhn, and Jami Smith offer samples of grilled or smoked meat from the amateur barbecue contest at the Mingle on Main Street Block Party, June 20. Several of their fellow church members entered the competition and use their winnings for youth and kids camp, which will be attended by more than 100 young people, said Kelli Kuhn, the wife of Pastor Jerry Kuhn. Business owner David Henry speaks at the Juneteenth Celebration held behind the Epicurean Delight (Epic Sno Cones) stand on June 19, as Shawnee Mayor Ed Bolt looks on. Henry said it is a time of reflection and remembrance, and he suggested voting as a way to celebrate Juneteenth “for all the people who couldn’t vote.” Gloria Wallace, with the Dunbar Heights Association, spoke about Opal Lee, the “Mother of Juneteenth,” and invited everyone to the Juneteenth Reception to be held at the Grand Casino.
