City of 5 Nations Downtown Auto Show

  • A 1932 Oldsmobile "Hupmobile" Series F222 glints in the summer sun during the City of 5 Nations Downtown Auto Show & Shine in downtown Shawnee on July 16. The car is owned by Louis Hopper, of Tecumseh, who said he bought the car in June 1987, has done all the welding and mechanic work, and has driven it since 2003. Countywide & Sun/Natasha Dunagan

  • During the City of 5 Nations Downtown Auto Show & Shine in Shawnee on July 16, one of the entries was a 1964 Chevy G-10 van with a hippie theme. It is owned by John Fiely, of Norman, who said, "You gotta see them smile at car shows. It's not just 'here's my car.'" Fiely has owned the van for 12 years and changes up the theme occasionally for shows. He said it took him two months to work on the paint job this time. Fiely won the "Special Interest" category. Taylor said it originally belonged to his father-in-law who was a Shriner in Wichita, KS, and it is mostly original.     The City of 5 Nations Downtown Auto Show & Shine brought out 178 registered vehicles and several that did not register for their third annual event in downtown Shawnee on July 16.

    The car show is hosted by Downtown Auto Body, owned by Mike and Kim Johnson, and is free, both to the public and to the car owners. There was live music from The Locals, and vendor booths set up inside the ruins of a building.

    Best of Show received $1,000, and cash prizes also went to the top 20 cars. The results of the car show are as follows:

    Top 1980s - Tanner Kasterke with a 1986 Monte Carlo and Marcus (last name unavailable) with a 1986 Grand National

    Top 1990s - Mike Lander with a 1993 Corvette and Alfred Gruite with a 454 SS Chevy truck

    Top 2000s to present - Josh Kasterke with a 2004 Chevy Truck and David Jones with a 2023 Chevy Corvette
