With the ups and downs over the last two years and the continued stress of the unknown it is so important to practice self care.

Avedis Foundation President and CEO Dr. Kathy Laster welcomed guests to the Avedis Foundation Speaker Series Friday, May 27 to hear Dr. Murali Krishna speak about “Strategies For Today’s Fast Paced Life.”

Laster quoted Eleanor Brown saying, “Self-care is not selfish. You cannot serve from an empty vessel.”

“I know so many of you in the audience serve others and care about others,” said Laster. “Sometimes the last thing you do is take care of yourself. Dr. Krishna is going to talk to you about why it’s so important to focus on your own emotional well being.”

Before telling a joke to the audience, he said, “when you laugh, your circulation goes up by 22 percent, from the top of your head to the tip of your toes. It is a scientific fact [that] the University of Maryland department of cardiology discovered with advanced imaging techniques. There’s no medicine. There’s no surgery that will produce that kind of effect in a beautifal way. We have a tool right here in our own hands.”

“I want you to remember this one statement,” said Krishna. “You have the power to heal within yourself. You’re already born with it. You don’t have to buy anything on the shelf. You don’t have to buy a book. You have a power within you that the Creator has created within you.”

Krishna said that Dr. Kataria in Mumbai Beach found several years ago that if you laugh for about 15 to 20 minutes a day, the patient that took the laughter therapy actually improved their health in six months in all parameters of health.”

On the other end of the spectrum is anger. Krishna said when you are angry your chances of having a heart attack increase by 230 percent for the next two hours.

“Long term hostility is a causative factor for heart disease, inflammation in the body, and a host of other problems,” said Krishna. “So we need to learn how to identify our emotions, and see how proper they are, how appropriate they are.”

He said persistent negative emotions cause heart disease; anger causes blood vessels to constrict up to 35 percent and the blood to coagulate faster.

Krishna then reiterated that people are born with “the power to heal, the power to be healthy. I want to share some tools you can take from Him today and apply to your own lives and teach perhaps other people in this community that could really transform your own health and well being in a very, very major way. We’ll talk about things like mindfulness and things like what kind of exercise can activate your healing system.”

Krishna said when stress is perceived our brain decides how the body should react; it produces lots of hormones that stimulate other hormones in the body. A chain reaction of hormones/chemicals in the body produce immediate effects on the body including increased blood pressure, contricted blood vessels, faster blood clotting, and inflammation.

He said without anyone touching you, more than 200 changes happen in the body, right away.

Krishna said in the diaphragm area is a healing system built in by the Creator.

“You activate it by activating the sensors that God has created in certain parts of the body. When you activate those sensors, the healting system is automatically activated; plus reaction goes down automatically.

“Breading is something that you have with you all your life, from birth until the moment of last breath,” Krishna said.

He said you stimulate the sensors by taking long, slow, deep breaths.

“Basically you’re expanding the diaphragm. When you expand it out with a deep breath, the sensor are stimulated and they send a signal immediately to the midbrain and through the vagus nerve. The signal that’s sent says I’m in charge now. I’m healing. I’m at peace. I have control.”

Krishna said multitasking is a misnomer. He said you are switching from one task to another and like a rolling stone gathering momentum. He says instead, mindfully appreciate and experience each moment.

“That’s how the Creator intended for us to experience each slice of life,” said Krishna.

He said positive thoughts and a good nights sleep are also helpful.

He said, “If you don’t sleep well you are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s.”

Krishna finished by sharing information shared in the talk which included

1) Resiliency

2) Natural relaxation training although Dr. Krishna strongly advises that one listen when not driving.

3) Sleep like a Baby and say goodnight to Insomnia
