Shawnee Public Schools and Gateway to Prevention are hosting the Overdose Awareness Community Event on Tues., Nov. 1, from 6-8 pm, at the Shawnee High School Performing Arts and Activity Center. The doors open at 5:30.

It will focus on fentanyl awareness, education, prevention and resources and will include the showing of a documentary and a question-and-answer session with a professional panel.

The professionals will include Gateway to Prevention Executive Director Jon Greenwood, SSM ER Director of Nursing Alma Skelton, the Montgomery Family, Stonegate Center & AMP Kyearra Morris and Texoma HIDTA Drug Intelligence Officer Major Mike Hoskins.

SPS Coordinator of Prevention Services Cindy Bartley said, “CPN hosted a similar event earlier this semester. We want to spread awareness of the increase in fentanyl overdoses throughout our state.”

“We want the Shawnee community to be aware of the rise in fentanyl overdoses,” said Bartley. “It is important for parents and caregivers to make their children aware of the risks of taking any kind of pill from a friend or stranger.”
