The Savage round ballers took a long trip to Poteau last Friday night and came home with a District Championship as they turned a close game into a runaway game over the Pirates.
The first half was a little tighter than expected as the Savages led 13-10 after the opening period and held only a four-point lead, 33-29 at halftime, over a Pirate team that has only won two games on the season.
The second half was all Savages as they showed up with a stifling defense and a blistering offense on the way to a 51-35 lead going to the fourth quarter. The final stanza put an exclamation point on the game as Tecumseh outran the Pirates 23-5 for a 74-40 rout and the District Title.
Tecumseh was led by Jace Edwards, who came out on fire and stayed that way throughout the game, ending with a whopping 34-points. Edwards scored seven points in the first, nine in the second, 10 in the third, and eight in the fourth. Edwards also had four rebounds, two blocked shots, and a couple of steals.
Jaxon Meyers also had a stellar game and was next in points with 12. Meyers was the leader on the boards with seven rebounds and had three assists, two steals, and a blocked shot. Brady Overstreet poured in nine points as well as three rebounds, three steals, and two assists for the Savages.
Brennon Carter, who sat with foul trouble for a good portion of the game, still managed to come up with six points and five rebounds, along with two blocks and two assists. Ben Corley tossed in four points and six rebounds, and two assists, while Marquan Krush added two points in the win and added a blocked shot. Jason Baldwin had seven points, all coming in the fourth quarter for the Savages.
The Savages are coming home with the District Title to begin the Regional Tournament on the home court tonight (Thursday). It’ll be a tough test at home for Tecumseh as they will face seventh ranked Classen SAS. The Comets have a season record of 14-5 and are coming off a bye for Districts.
Tecumseh moved their season record to 13-11 and have won six of their last eight games, including the District Title victory. Tipoff for tomorrow (Friday) is set for 8 pm as the Savages host the Comets.
With a win, the Savages would advance to the Regional Finals Monday, Feb. 28 at Byng to face the Mt. St. Mary-Broken Bow winner. A loss would drop Tecumseh to the Regional Consolation bracket for a Saturday night meeting with the winner of the Stigler-Byng winner, also at Byng.
