Geoff Root passed away November 17, 2023. Geoff was born in 1936 in Burlington, VT, to George Lowry and Luella Root.
He earned a scholarship to Dartmouth University where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts Degree. Geoff’s commitment to service was exemplifi ed in his decision to join the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served with distinction. His military career was marked by bravery and excellence, earning him several accolades including a Bronze Star, and a Purple Heart in Vietnam. Geoff’s leadership in the Marine Corps was not just about missions and strategies through 3 tours in Vietnam and later with deployments in Yokohama, Yokosuka, Japan and Cherry Point, NC; it was about the humane and ethical treatment of his team and those under his command. He retired with distinction as a Lieutenant Colonel commanding the combat engineer battalion WES-27.
He is survived by his wife Carolyn, their children Timothy, Nathan, Zachary and Amanda, and the many lives Geoff touched. Services were held on November 24 at Walker Funeral Chapel.
