James David Farthing

James “Jim” Farthing passed away Mar. 13, 2025. Jim was born on June 17, 1942, to Thelbert and Theresa Farthing. A lifelong learner and educator, Jim attended Oklahoma Baptist University, earning a bachelor’s degree in history before continuing his studies at Duke University, where he received his doctorate in history. He returned to his hometown for a career in teaching at OBU, where he spent many years shaping the minds of students and sharing his deep passion for history. Beyond the classroom, Jim was a man devoted to his faith. He poured his heart into the local church, serving as a pastor, singing in the choir at First Baptist Church for 34 years, and preparing meals for the homeless. His life was marked by a love for service and a commitment to caring for others and his community, shown even by his work as deputy sheriff for Pottawatomie County.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Ramona Farthing; his sister, Iris Harp; his son, David Farthing; daughter-in-law Sheila and his cherished grandchildren, Jacob and twins Katherine and Madison.

Services were held at Heritage Church in Shawnee, OK on Mar. 19, 2025.
