LaVerne Compton Dawson passed away Jan. 8, 2025, in Lexington, OK. She was born Nov. 25, 1928, in Trousdale, OK to Asa L. and Maudie Reecer Compton. She graduated from Wanette High School. She worked as a telephone operator before she married Billy Joe Dawson in 1949. Following the death of her husband in 1959, LaVerne worked at Sears in Shawnee and after several years, moved to Wanette to be near family. She held various jobs including assistant at Wanette Public Schools, waitress at a local cafe’, and manager of the Wanette Senior Citizens Center where she worked until her retirement.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents Asa and Maudie Compton; sons Kenny Dawson and Mark Dawson; brothers Claude, Clarence, Cecil, and Clyde Compton; and sisters Lucille Suchy and Louise Kersey.
She is survived by granddaughters Alisha Payne, Jennifer McClure, Melissa Dawson, and Miranda Bullock; seven great grandchildren; and many nephews, nieces, and friends.
Services were held Jan. 13, 2025 at Cooper Funeral Home Chapel with Jim Kelly of Asher Church of Christ officiating. Burial followed at Wanette Cemetery under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh.
