Walter Johnson passed away April 12, 2023.
He was born at home on May 1, 1932 to Henry and Zelma (Deere) Johnson in Norman, Oklahoma.
Walter was raised in Norman. He lived in Tecumseh for 25 years before moving to Midwest City where he has resided for the last 12 years.
He married Betty Bennett on December 2, 1966 in Little Axe, Oklahoma.
Walter worked as a heavy equipment operator for Pottawatomie and Cleveland Counties and the City of Norman.
He was a proud member of the Absentee Shawnee Tribe.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister: Barbara Wilkerson; and three brothers, Maurice Johnson, Jerome Johnson and Anthony David Johnson.
Survivors include his wife Betty Johnson of the home; one daughter: LaFonda Taylor of Midwest City, OK; two sons: Henry Johnson of Little Axe, OK and Grant Johnson of Del City, OK; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three sisters, JoAnn Lovins of Norman, OK, Velma Hutchinson of Norman, OK and Noreen Johnson of Tecumseh, OK; and other extended family and friends.
Tribal Rites were held April 13, 2023 at Absentee Shawnee Tribe Community Center with Glenn Mann officiating. Burial followed April 14, 2023 at Absentee Shawnee Tribe Burial Grounds under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh.
