Iowa State Summary The Big 12 Conference title chase became slightly clearer this week as Oklahoma State bumped mistake prone Texas off the floor, 41-34 in Stillwater. The Cowboys win is the second consecutive occasion that the Waddies have recovered from a double digit scoring deficit to beat Texas. The Cowboys did it by limiting the ‘horns to only three points in the final 34 minutes of game time, despite the absence of five prominent players and the loss of several others to injuries during the game.

Oklahoma State went the entire contest without a single yard lost via penalty, while Texas was saddled with 14 penalties and the loss of 118 yards. Illegal procedure was a recurring night mare for Texas, in which the “horns scored only a field goal in their final eight possessions. Hard nose QB Spencer Sanders, and corner back Jason Taylor II led the Cowboys comeback, with 423 yards total offense (Sanders) and two interceptions (Taylor). The Waddies scored on a 42 yard pass and run to break a 34-34 tie, with 4:23 remaining; then Taylor swiped a Texas pass to end any hopes of a Longhorn comeback. The Cowboys’ defense prevailed despite tough Texas running back Bjan Robinson’s 148 pile driving rushing yards.

Oklahoma State is now 3-1 against the Big 12’s remaining “Big 5” conference leaders. A win this week at Kansas State would place the Waddies in a prime position for a trip to the Conference title game at Arlington. OSU contends this week against the last of five main contenders in a crucial contest against one loss (Big 12) Kansas State in Manhattan.

The K-State Wildcats lost starting quarterback Adrian Martinez in the first series against Big 12 leader TCU as the Horn Frogs overcame a 28-10 halftime deficit to whip KSU, 38-28. Last year’s starting QB Will Howard almost led the Wildcats to victory before the Frogs premier defense solved K-State’s unique run-pass option offensive scheme. Even in the loss, reliable 5 foot six inch KSU running back Deuce Vaughn still put up 122 yards rushing and a long TD run against the Horn Frogs A loss by either OSU, or K-State, would not end the Big 12 race for either team. But the Wildcats have the more stringent schedule with future contests against two loss Baylor and Texas.

Baylor’s Bears illustrated their Conference title defense with a 35-23 victory over Kansas in Waco.

Baylor freshman Richard Reese hammered 188 yards rushing on 31 carries, as the Bears built a 28-3 halftime lead on the struggling Jayhawks who were playing their third consecutive game without starting quarterback Jason Daniels. The three loss Jays are off this week in anticipation of getting Daniels back to revive their attention getting season in a November 5 game at Oklahoma State.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders grabbed attention this week in a robust 48-10 victory over West Virginia. The Mountaineers had proven to be a stout competitor until Saturday, when Tech’s red shirt freshman QB Behren Morton torched WVU for 325 yards passing on 28 of 45 completions. Morton, who began the season as the Raider’s 3rd team signal caller, passed for 2 TD’s in Tech’s hurry-up offense, that posts more than 100 snaps per game. At only two losses in Conference, the Red Raiders are still scheduled to play TCU and Baylor, and could be a factor in the Big 12 race down the stretch.

As six squads enter the second half of Big 12 Conference play with no more than two losses, each week will prove a battle for survival in the race for the Conference championship, with this week’s Baylor-Texas Tech match a probable title elimination game.
