Lonnie George Dunkin, 94, passed away on June 13, 2025. He was born on Oct. 2, 1930 in Oklahoma City to Violet Marie (Melott) and George William Dunkin. Lonnie graduated from Capitol Hill High School in 1948. He attended Oklahoma State University on a track scholarship and graduated in May 1952. He met his wife, Doris Lavone McBride, at OSU in 1950 and the pair was married on Dec. 25, 1951. He served in the Transportation Corp during the Korean conflict and was assigned at the Port of Inchon, Korea until being honorably discharged in 1954. Later, Lonnie received his Masters Degree in Education in 1968 from Sam Houston University in TX and served as teacher and administrator for the Aldine School District in the Houston, TX area until retirement in 1986.
Lonnie was preceded in death by his wife, Doris L. Dunkin.
Survivors include his son, Lonnie G. Dunkin, Jr. of Ketchikan, AK; two grandsons, Lonnie G. Dunkin, III of Austin, TX and Shaun Michael Dunkin of Ketchikan, AK; five great-granddaughters; one great-grandson; several cousins and many Potawatomi cousins connected to the Melott family.
A funeral ceremony for Lonnie will be held on July 2, 2025 at 2 pm at the Walker Funeral Chapel. He will be available for viewing beginning at 9 am prior to the ceremony with family available to greet friends at 1 pm. Burial will follow at Tecumseh Cemetery with military honors. Following the burial, family and friends are invited back to Walker Funeral Service for a reception. Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army.
