Verna Marie Akin, age 97, of Maud, OK, passed away on Sept. 28, 2026.
Verna was born on May 4, 1929, in Tecumseh, OK, to Virgil Allen and Mary Lou (Robison) Allen. She spent her life living on the Centennial Farm Homestead that she dearly loved.
Verna graduated from Maud High School and married Floyd Akin on July 3, 1947.
She served as a Sunday School teacher and became the first woman to be ordained as a Deacon at First Christian Church. Later, in recognition of her years of faithful service and leadership, she was named Elder Emeritus.
Verna was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 70 years Floyd Akin; brother and sister-in-law, Robert L. & Cleta Allen.
Those left to cherish her memory are her sons and daughters-in-law: Danny Floyd Akin, of Shawnee, OK, Gary Allen Akin and Edie of Shawnee, OK, Ricky Dale Akin and Jennifer of Steamboat, CP; granddaughter and spouse, Meredith Marie (Akin) and Jason Tyler, of Norman, OK; grandchildren and spouses: Garrett Brooks Akin and Meghan, of Shawnee, OK, Corey James Akin of Lapeer, MI, Mary Nicole Akin, of Shawnee, OK, Sarah Elizabeth Akin of Shawnee, OK; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 9 am to 5 pm, Oct. 3, 2026, and from 1 pm. to 7 pm, Oct. 4, 2026, with a family gathering to receive friends and loved ones from 3-5 pm.
Funeral Service will be held at 10 am, Oct. 5, 2026, at the Cooper Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Ray Belford, First Christian Church, Shawnee, OK officiating. Burial will follow at the Cummings Cemetery in Maud, OK, under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home.
