Virginia L. Mahardy Sutton, 89, of Oklahoma City died Dec. 2, 2021 at her home.

She was born March 2, 1932, at Brendle Corner in the Little Axe area to Harry B. Mahardy and Lillie M. (Sloan) Ellis.

Virginia graduated from Pawnee Indian School in Pawnee, OK. In 1950 she attended Haskell Institute in Lawrence, KS.

She made her home in Oklahoma City where she has lived ever since.

Virginia was an associate engineer for BTC Systems, Inc. and owned and operated Abnee Industries, Inc. in Moore. She was elected Oklahoma Business Women of the Year in 1987 for Indian

She was a proud member of the Absentee Shawnee Tribe. Virginia enjoyed arts, crafts, travel, bowling and dancing.

She was preceded in death by her son, Ray Dean Sutton; father, Harry B. Mahardy; mother, Lillie Sloan Ellis; step-father, John L. Ellis, Sr.; sister, Evelyn M. Johnson; and two brothers, J.D. Mahardy and Roy G. Mahardy.

Survivors include two daughters, Toni Jean Loneman of the home; and Judy and Lamont Toppah of Clinton, OK; two brother, Gary Fuerstenberg of Duluth, MN and Richie and Debora Sutton; one sister, Betty Mahardy Watson of Norman, OK; with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchild; and other extended family and friends.

Service was Dec. 6, 2021, at Cooper Funeral Home Chapel. Tribal Rites followed at Tecumseh Cemetery with Glenn Mann under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh.
