The Golden Age Center is decked out for one of our favorite times of the year, Halloween. This tradition of jack-o-lanterns, trick-or-treat goodies, and dressing up in scary costumes was originated in Ireland and Scotland and brought to the USA in the 19th century by those immigrants. They had celebrated “All Hallow’s Day” for centuries in memory of their dead. We are looking forward to our Halloween party which includes treats and a costume contest on Oct. 28th. We are never to old to have fun and enjoy good food and fellowship. We wished Happy Birthday to Patrick Breen, Anita Combs, Donna Dyke, Martha Sliger, Jack Thomas, and Kay Whaley with a birthday cake on Oct. 20th. If you are over 60 years of age, come join us!
I want to congratulate the city for the idea of a scarecrow contest! The local businesses, city offices, and residents have certainly stepped up with some spooky and clever scarecrows. I would not want to be a judge for this contest!! Do not miss Clark Kent, better known as Superman, in battle with Spiderman at the newspaper’s office or ET going home over the bicycle shop or the ghoul decked out in a cowboy hat and boots strumming his guitar on Broadway. Good luck to all!
Scarecrows were not the only thing I noticed on Broadway. Tecumseh’s streetscape has been blooming in spite of the drought so that it is a pleasure to walk down the street. There, I spied Monarch butterflies and honeybees flitting from flower to flower, a glorious sight! Both of those essential insects are in danger from the increased use of pesticides. The city has invested in an urban garden setting to protect their environment. I encourage you to do your part by not littering, etc. One suggestion to help our city, our state, our country is to become an informed voter. Please plan to vote on November 8th for your favorite candidates; not your favorite party. You can split your votes for the best person to be in office. You can find information about the ballot online or at our election board that is located in Shawnee across from the courthouse. There will be several judges on the ballot as well. In fact you can vote early at the election board if you are not going to be able to go to the polls on election day. They will be open (11/3-5/2022). Don’t forget your picture ID. You will be required to sign that you will not vote on the 8th. Remember that this election may determine whether our country goes further into inflation, loses its oil reserve, destroys the oil industry, continues open borders, and raises your taxes.
