I didn’t know it at the time, but I had all the symptoms of a “news-a-holic” at a very early age. Following supper at my grandparents (Dad’s side), we would adjourn to the coldest, darkest room in the house, which contained a breadboxsized battery-powered radio.

With all good intentions, I planted four tomato plants at the beginning of summer and then promptly forgot about them. They were not far from the back door, behind a row of fast-growing snap peas and some faltering garlic and onions. Out of sight, out of my mind, thinking I could grow anything.
