(Necessary introduction: Lighthouses alerted ships of dangerous rocks. Some lighthouses were on high hills to give the big ships the warning. Unfortunately, some places had dangerous rocks that were below the line of sight of the ships. To ensure safety, fires were often built near the rocks.

It happened after we had gone to the annual Memorial Day ceremony at Marshfield Cemetery in MO. My older son, who was around 14 at the time, told me he had decided he was joining the military when he got out of high school. I said a silent prayer that he’d change his mind by then.
