From Silence to Strength: A Survivor Speaks

Editor’s Note: Shawnee Kickapoo Martinez has a story to tell. Her only regret is that she didn’t speak her truth sooner. It’s taken her 38 years to be able to talk publicly about her trauma; but she began a journey of healing long before today.

SPS Board Hires New Superintendent

For the Shawnee Public Schools (SPS) Board of Education, the hunt began on Jan. 24 when they approved the “superintendent search” services through the Oklahoma State School Boards Association (OSSBA).It ended at the April 22 special session meeting after a short executive session.
Lance Phelps is sworn in to the Ward Five Seat of the Tecumseh School Board at the April 14 meeting by Board President Iva Bingham. Also at the meeting, Seat Four was officially declared vacant. Community members residing within Ward 4 boundaries have been asked to submit applications to temporarily fill that seat. Julie Talton, Countywide & Sun

Lance Phelps takes seat five on Tecumseh School Board

To begin the meeting, Tecumseh Alum, Lance Phelps, was sworn in as the board member for Ward 5. Phelps filed for this seat in December for the term lasting from April 2025 to March 2030.
