SCI hosts Night to Dream Prom

On May 15, approximately 215 People Experiencing Exceptional Purpose (PEEP) and an estimated 250 volunteers, were transported back to the 80’s (aka the Grand Casino Hotel and Resort) for a “Night to Dream” prom hosted by South Central Industries (SCI).

SSC offering free concurrent classes

Free summer meals and snacks program for youth

The Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma’s Summer Feeding Program returns this June to provide free meals and snacks for children all summer long.Locations will be available throughout central and western Oklahoma, thanks to a gift from Love’s Travel Stops for the third straight year.

Oklahoma History Day for Shawnee Middle School

Students from Shawnee Middle School showcased outstanding achievement at the 2026 Oklahoma National History Day State Contest, earning top honors, national qualification, and special recognition for their hard work and dedication to historical research.

Twelve area students were honored at the awards ceremony Sunday for the Jim Spurr Student Poetry Contest. They were chosen from almost 100 entries, sorted into three categories: 4th-5th grade, 6th-8th grade, and 9th-12th grade, with one poet selected for the Grand Prize.

Fallen heroes remembered

The local Memorial Day ceremonies began at the Pottawatomie County Educational Veterans Museum, at 331 N. Broadway in Shawnee, for a Gold Star Families Event.During the event on May 25, Shawnee Veterans Memorial Committee Chairman Bill Ford gave an update on the museum.

PAVE hosts District 27 House of Representatives Forum

The Pottawatomie Advocates for Voter Education (PAVE) hosted a candidate forum on May 12, 2026, for candidates for the OK House of Representatives Dist. 27, incumbent Danny Sterling and candidates Roberta Lewis and Shoney.Below, the Countywide & Sun chose to publish a few of the questions asked.

Styrofoam recycled at Shawnee Public Library

Styrofoam, or expanded polystyrene, can take up 30 percent of space in landfills and takes 500 years to decompose, according to the Society of Environmental Journalists website.With this in mind, the University Lutheran Church Green Team, out of Norman, began its Styrofoam recycling project in 2016.
