August’s weather certainly had a big effect on night sky viewing. While the observatory had a number of nights with significant cloud cover, unfortunately, they only produced enough rain here to clump the dust on the windshields of the cars!

Citizen Potawatomi Nation Chairman John “Rocky” Barrett and Vice Chairman Linda Capps drape a blanket on the shoulders of the Grandmother of Juneteenth, Opal Lee. Chairman Barrett said, “The giving of a blanket carries more than just the giving of a gift. If you’re given a blanket, in Potawatomi tradition it means that we’re going to keep your memory warm in our hearts from now on.” Lee kept the blanket on throughout the rest of the event. The Grandmother of Juneteenth Visits Shawnee

Opal Lee is known as the Grandmother of Juneteenth. On Saturday, Aug. 20, she spoke about Juneteenth at a public event hosted by the Citizen Potawatomi Nation at the Cultural Heritage Center.
Opal Lee is not only a national figure, but as of Saturday morning, she is a finalist for the Nobel Prize.

County Approves Education Tax Funds For Tecumseh To Update WiFi Antennas

Tecumseh Public Schools is updating all of its wifi antennas throughout the district. Superintendent Robby Kinsey received approval from the Pottawatomie Board of County Commissioners Monday, Aug. 22, to use a portion of the schools education sales tax money to pay for the upgrade.

NonProfit Transition Time Is Near For The CAC

This time last year, the Child Advocacy Center was in dire need of help to keep the doors open. Multiple county meetings were hijacked with talks of funding and discussions of whether or not to temporarily close the doors.

Avedis Awards Salvation Army With $20K Grant

The Avedis Foundation awarded The Salvation Army in Shawnee a $20,000 grant on July 21 to help them reach a fundraising goal of $150,000. The $150,000 was matched by the Paul Milburn Match Fund and allows The Salvation Army to have $300,000 in unrestricted, operational funding.

Shultz Reports Wes Watkins Reservoir Remain Good For Now

Steven Shultz, Project Manager for the Pottawatomie County Development Authority (PCDA) reported to the board that the Wes Watkins Reservoir lake level was only down one foot. With the drought conditions as they are, this was good news.
